Government-held records are different. South Carolina's Family Privacy Protection Act, S.C. Code §§ 30-2-10 through 30-2-50, governs state-agency handling of personal information but does not erase every public county or municipal record. Birth records have separate privacy rules under S.C. Code §§ 44-63-80 and 44-63-84: they become public after 100 years, while certified access before then is restricted. Requests involving an official record must go to the appropriate custodian.
